121. United States of America - The United States of America

Artist: United States of America
Album: The United States of America
Year: 1968

The United States of America is one of the weirdest relics of the psychedelic era, an album full of circus effects, bubbly Moog syntheziers, and whacked-out lyrics.

I think this album is awesome. Songs like "Where Is Yesterday?" and "The American Metaphysical Circus" are really tripped out but really accessible. Everything on this album is at least interesting. Not all of the band's little sonic experiments really work, but it never gets boring. And I like the voice of the female singer, Dorothy Moskovitz (about the least rockin' name I've ever heard associated with rock music). She reminds me of the vocals for the band Broadcast, who I'm pretty sure have cited this album as a major influence upon their music.

At the time, I'm guessing this was a little too weird for a lot of people, and there was certainly no single here to throw onto the radio, so this album sorta faded into obscurity for a long while before being unearthed and consequently revered in the past ten to fifteen years. It really does sound as though it could've been made by an indie band circa 2000 instead of by a psych rock band in 1968. Cool stuff.

Rating: Worth repeated listens
